Cedar fences are very durable and suitable to withstand wear and tear from different weather conditions thrown at them. They are also one of the more low-maintenance fences out there that not only are structurally sound but also look beautiful. That is not to say that you will not have to do your best to maintain and care for them. Cedar fences just like every other fence require cleaning, general maintenance, and treatment or sealing every year. That is why our talented team over at Palisade Fence has put together this guide on caring for your cedar fence.
If you elected to install a cedar fence then you went for a look of beauty with the addition of privacy. To keep that beauty and privacy for years to come there are a couple of things you can do:
Cleaning: Cleaning cedar fences is not that hard of a task considering other fences require much more treating. If you elect to use a power washer then it is simple enough but if you would like a deeper cleanse you may want to search up some solutions. Cleaning solutions can be made right at home or you can take a trip to Home Depot and get a solution that they sell in-store. The solutions are better if you are looking to get rid of holes or stains that may have been left behind throughout the year. If you allow those things to stay there then they will begin to eat away at the fence.
Sealer: Sealing a cedar fence is one of the best things you can do to improve its longevity. Not only will it keep it looking fresh and shiny but it will also help protect the core of the fence from those harsh weather elements. Applying a waterproof sealer will protect the food from things like splintering, cracking, and just your general wear and tear from weather elements. It would be ideal if you could do this at least once a year but if you can’t every other year is fine. We don’t suggest sealing your fence right as soon as it is installed, instead wait a couple of months and check it with a moisture meter.
Repairing: Repairs on any wood fence may be necessary as they are natural elements and can take some of the blunt force from the seasons changing. If you are handy and want to give it a shot by yourself by all means give it a go but keep in mind that you do have to be careful to prevent further damage. Cedar fences can last up to around two decades, so the small investment in hiring a professional may be worth the extra time and effort that you will ultimately have to put in.
Before you get to any of this it would be best to take a walk around your fence and see what exactly needs to be done. If you think it is too late and your fence is well past repair then electing to install a new one maybe your best option. Prioritize and discover what issues are first versus what issues can be dealt with later on.
